USOM EVENT RESULTS –SATURDAY  27 MAY – MANSFIELD HOLLOW SITE

   Well yes, we did not have rain for the first time this season. The water was warm enough to wade in with just sandals. Sun block was lathered on and the folding chairs migrated to the shade of the big pine on the lawn where we were afforded a panoramic view of the whole course. We decided to employ the traditional triangle course, which gave us quite a variety of wind angles to work our way around the course. The winds were under 5 mph with a few periods of calm. The sailing was like eye surgery. Small adjustments were the requirements for success. Jim Linville used the day to experiment with his new Venom (ex- Jack Villa). Fran Gowash had to replace a failed rudder servo, so he was missing from the competition for a number of heats. Ron Rhault was most successful with his Talon outfitted with a big B style rig (full height jib). The only time that his B rig was at a disadvantage was when the winds were very light; then the taller A rigs captured the only winds above his rig. It was observed that Mik Vasmatics’ Venom had the best acceleration. He used a tall rig with full height Jib to maximize wind utilization. After a long afternoon of eye surgery we were ready to retire from the sailing. All in all a very pleasant day spent lakeside. 

Note, Jim Linville discovered a source of screws that fit the sail winch drum on Futaba 5801 servos. He graciously left a supply of them for club members.
