FIRST USOM EVENT RESULTS –SATURDAY 29 APRIL – MANSFIELD HOLLOW SITE
Ah, a sunny day with moderate temperatures. The perfect time between frigid Spring and sweaty Summer! In the morning there were whitecaps from the gusty Easterly breezes. Mostly 6-7 mph with gusts to 12 mph. It looked to be a tough time for the USOM butterflies. They are very efficient creatures, but give them some strong winds and they get kicked and bounced around by the breezes. At times it was very challenging. Bob Shluger had his IOM in the mix for no points; he just wanted to sail. His Ocka showed why the IOMs are so adaptable. See results below. The winds were not overpowering the whole time. Just when they settled down and everyone was puttering along well, a strong gust would come up and swirl the boats about for a few minutes, then leave them dizzy and pointed in the wrong directions.
Jim Linville brought his new venom with a 2.4 gHz Spektrum radio. He only was able to get a few good heats in and then while being mast hung with Rich Ellis’s boat, the boat took in some water and a drop got into the tiny spektrum receiver. It was all over for Jim. The spektrum receivers do not have much water protection. They were designed for super light park flyers so the case is minimal. A word to the wise is seal these receivers in balloons or plastic bags.
Next weekend is the IOM Nationals in Detroit. Our next event is our second spring IOM regatta on the 13th of May (the day before Mother’s day….you have now been notified and you have enough time to get something nice). The regatta results are below:
