IOM FIFTH FALL EVENT RESULTS –SATURDAY 16 SEPTEMBER – MANSFIELD HOLLOW SITE
What a contrast…last time we competed at Mansfield, the winds were 10-20 mph and we used our #2 rigs, now this weekend the winds were minimal, some times very light and sometimes just plain light. I define very light as when some boats lose their headings and sort of drift. Light is when everyone moves ok, but races take a while. With extremes of wind conditions the differences in hull design show up very well. In high winds, some boats broach a lot while others soldier on. Under very light conditions some boats sail on while others sit. Case in point; on Saturday my Ericca moved well under very light conditions, while others drifted, (I was able to win two races under those conditions). When the winds rose up to light, my Ericca was left behind by the Ocka and the Cockatoos. It was clear evidence of design differences. Given a choice I would choose designing a boat to handle light to medium winds, not very light winds.
I sent out the results from the Canadian IOM Regatta in Kingston, Ont that happened this last weekend, which, of course, explains why Jake, John and Dan were missing from our competition. Congratulations guys for your participation with the tougher sailors. This coming weekend holds our 6th USOM regatta at Mansfield on Saturday the 23rd. On Sunday, the 24th, the Regional Soling Interclub will take place in Worcester, MA. Bob Shluger, Ron Rhault and I will attend that event. Congrats to Bob for sailing his wide body Ocka to a win Saturday.
