IOM LAST FALL EVENT RESULTS –SATURDAY 4 NOV – MANSFIELD HOLLOW SITE
As usual the wind forecast by Intellicast was wrong. They said 10mph from the NW, which is from behind the trees. What we got was mostly East wind at 5-8. We all like to know what to expect, but I suppose by now we have all learned to show up and find out. What we also did learn was that the site was very flooded last Saturday with the high water mark about twenty lateral feet up the bank so we may have had five extra feet of flood water. What that means to us is that when there is heavy rains the dam engineers decrease the exit flow from the dam a lot in order to protect the downstream river level. The result is that our site gets drowned out quickly.
The day turned out to be a very sunny and pleasant fall day. The competitors that were in the running for second place for the season showed up to decide the standings in person. The winds were interesting in that there were strong wind shifts and the lucky boat driver that picked the right tack could make big gains. I have not seen such position changes in the heats for a long time. The resultant racing was quite spirited with the leader looking over his shoulder to see who was coming up next. Bob Shluger squeezed out a one point advantage over Jake with Al Dion right behind to take first, second, and third, respectively. Closer racing is not possible. In review of the season, I observed that the level of sailing execution and respect for the rules have reached a new high. There is an apparent ease in each boater’s operation during a race; very little grousing or whining, just very efficient. I suppose that is a result of an intense amount of sailing this season, as well as more familiarity with the rules and a good level of gentlemanly respect for other sailors.
