WELCOME TO THE
GREATER HARTFORD MODEL YACHT CLUB
2010

ClUB UNDER 40 REGATTA AT MANSFIELD – 27 JUNE 09

The weather was beautiful, but the winds were very light. It is a curious combination of frustrating wind conditions and intense competitors. The light conditions weigh on the patience of the skippers and the verbal comments reveal the underlying tension. Serious, rational competitors will still excel, using their drive and observational skills to trim the boats to the conditions and find the fast way around the course. Fascinating….. Bob Schluger brought his grill and fired it up for us to use. People are beginning to take advantage of this service, with dogs, pork chops, and sausages being cooked. How civilized to have grilled lunch at our races,, thanks Bob.

Dick Laffargue showed up for the first time with his IOM. When he first raced that boat it was a dog, but steady work on the rigging and alignment has brought it around to be a good competitor. His comments were that his IOM was not suited for light winds, very narrow boats tend to resist turning and are wetter than wide hulls. Lets see the next time when the winds must be stronger

Finally last, but not least Dan brought his son, Eric to introduce him to sailing. Nice to meet you, Eric, but understand that the boring wind conditions are not the usual….  Rich

NEXT REGATTA  -  MANSFIELD HOLLOW SITE – 11 JULY

Our next event will be an OVER 40” class of boats, that is STARs and US12s. Of course you can bring your favorite hull and sail along with us, however we prefer boats that are similar in size. I think that I will bring my US12 to try out the topping lift on the jib  .. Rich Ellis
