IOM REGATTA RESULTS - SATURDAY 8 JULY– MANSFIELD HOLLOW SITE
Firstly, thanks to Ron for setting up the course, and to Bill for doing a portion of the RD duties after his transmitter batteries went tits up. Then thanks to Fran and Ron for calculating the results with only one minor error, ( pretty good after a long day in the hot sun). Thanks to Pete for packing up the table and other stuff and thanks to the crew who returned the dingy to the van. Finally thanks to me for doing the big portion of the RD duties. My medication takes a toll in the hot weather, so the pressure of racing is just too much. The old saw about many hands making light work is still true!
This day had our largest turnout for the season; I guess missing a month of racing brings out competitors even though the day promised a hot and humid time. It hit 90 degrees outside on my home thermometer. The wind were primarily out of the SE, which is not a common vector. They were stop and go conditions. For about half a heat the winds were moderate and everyone moved out well, then someone turned off the winds for about 3-4 minutes, then they returned again. There was lots of really close racing and the last leg often had 3-5 boats turning through the downwind gate together, then taking different tacks up to the finish. Pretty exciting stuff with all the tactical moves.
Even though Greg V showed his skill in light winds in this event, the spring series is still pretty close at the top of the table. The next race and final race is on the 22nd. It looks like Dan must beat Greg by two places and Jake has the potential if Greg and Dan finish less than 5th place or so. The Spring champion will win a nice serving tray for a trophy. regards, Rich Ellis, Sec
