SPECIAL EVENT (EC-12 OPEN) –SATURDAY 1 JULY– MANSFIELD HOLLOW SITE
Finally we get great weather; a perfect day with moderate winds from the SW and DRY skies. Last Saturday the site was flooded over which in itself would have made the IOM event difficult . Our body of water has two intended purposes; 1. provide clean water to the Willimantic reservoir and 2. provide flood control. There are no directives to keep the water at the right level for our boats. When the rains are heavy the Corps of Engineers hold back the rain water in our lake in order to keep the downstream river at normal levels.
It appears that interests in boat classes wax and wane. The EC-12 class is one class in the waxing mode. The increase in interest is partially due to the strong support by the national administration. The web site is useful and kept up to date. The class newsletter keeps everyone informed in the class activity. They have had molds made to supply competitors with good boats. Certainly one of the attractions to the one design class is that once one has a decent hull, one does not need to constantly chase after the latest and greatest boat.
Jake Leo took the initiative to set up an open EC12 regatta at our site. He volunteered to be RD and promote the event. As a result we were able to have an entertaining competition. The main battle was for second place since Bruce Walton showed his heels to the fleet, but between Dick Hitchcock and Al Dion the race for second continued until the last heat.
